Power Line Buck

Well it was definitely worth putting the camera at the gate from the power line. I got some pics of a nice 8 pointer along with four smaller bucks last week. If the poachers and coyotes don't get the 8 pointer he should be a really nice buck next year. All of the deer activity was at night and that's why we weren't seeing anything during the day the last couple of weeks. These are from my IR camera so all the night pics are in black and white. The first five pics were taken a little past 7:30. The last three are of I believe the same buck taken around 10:30 later that evening. It appears that some fog set in between when the first pics were taken and later that night.

I think he had enough of the picture taking :).

Is there much poaching around there? We have some - but mostly close to hunting season when I guess that the poachers feel bolder.

That is a strong looking deer.

KB - It's a big problem here. Most of the poaching here is done at night from the roads. Lot of the fields are located right next to the road and it's easy picking for people spotlighting and shooting. It goes on year round but really picks up in early September when the cornfields are harvested. We've gotten license plate numbers and the Conservation Officers have made arrests but it seems like for every one that is caught there's three more that isn't. I'd be willing to bet that over half the bucks that are entered into the state big game contests are killed illegally :(.

Oh wow. Didn't realize poaching was such a problem. That's a real shame...

He is a beautiful buck! I hope he makes it - at least until you have him in your scope...

Once again, Joe, appreciate you sharing your camera pictures with us all. He is a fine looking buck. Cross your fingers that he makes through all the obstacles until next hunting season. Unfortunate, to hear that the poaching problem is as bad as it sounds.

That is a nice buck, Joe. He looks pretty symmetrical. Give him another year or two and he'll really be a dandy! But, like you said, he's got to get past the yotes and poachers.

Yikes... like a mystery movie!

I agree with Brian -- in a year or two, he could be a monster. He already has a hefty body. Hope he survives for you to seem him another time. :)

Good point about poaching that you made above. I have an award for you over at my blog and would love it if you would drop by to retrieve it! :)
