Snow Storm

Finally got out to check my cameras after the big snow storm a couple of weeks ago and I got some good pics. I'll start out with some from the storm.

It started snowing the afternoon of 1/22. By dusk we had around 6" on the ground and there was a lot of deer movement.

That night the storm really raged as you can see from the pics. Deer movement continued until around midnight and then I didn't get any deer pics here until two days later. During bad storms like this one the deer will move into the dense cedar thickets and hold up. By morning we had around 18" of snow on the ground. By the afternoon of the 23rd we had around 22" total for the storm.

Sunshine finally on the 24th. Snow falling from the trees triggered the camera. I got some nice shots of a beautiful red fox I'll post later.

Sun Shine At Last

We lucked out and only got 22". Lot of folks further north in the valley got over 30". Hopefully we got some good trailcam pics during the storm. Be at least next weekend before I can check the cameras.

Snow Bulls Eye

Looks like I'm pretty much in the middle of the bulls eye. Got plenty of food, drinks, and firewood. All the snow removal equipment is fueled up, chained up, and ready to go. Looks like I'm ready to ride it out until the sun comes back out on Sunday.

It's also probably not good when Al Roker mentions you in his weather forecast. LOL!!!

Snow is a Four Letter Word

      While I wouldn’t say I hate snow I am getting really tired of it this winter. We actually had a beautiful sunny warm day today and it was so nice to get out and check my cameras. I really got some good shots the past couple of weeks from two cameras. But I’ll start out with some from the big snow we had. I had 16” at my house. It was a light fluffy snow so my snow blower just rolled through it. The good thing about snow is I get to play with one of my toys :).

Snow Squall Does

Since it was 80 here today I felt like posting some shots of does feeding during a brief snow storm we had last week. This little storm really got the deer feeding. I got these pics at the Mt. Pond of this group of does and another set out on the farm at the same time of other group.
It was a beautiful day Sunday checking my cameras so I decide to take the time and move a few cameras to different locations. One of those moved was along the creek where I had hoped to get a mink but I was really disappointed in how little activity I got there. Needless to say no minks were to be had.

Snow Doe

Here's a couple of pics of a doe during the heavy part of the snow storm we had last Thursday. We got about four inches and most of it is still with us. Notice the snow on the deer's back. A deer's winter coat is incredibly well insulated. It's winter coat is generally two inches longer and darker than the summer coat. It is also thicker and the hairs are hollow which provides even more insulation. The snow will not melt from the deer's body temperature. They will either shake it off or the sun will melt it after the storm.

One Antler Buck

I got pics of this buck last winter. Once in early December and again in early February. If I would have only gotten the February pics I would have just thought the he had shed the antler on the right side. But being that it was already gone in early December I'm guessing that it was broken off fighting. You can't get a good look at the pedicle to see if it was broken off flush or if something else had happened to it. No one saw him live so I got no help there.


I enjoy the snow pics just not the snow. We haven't had much more than flurries but I heard on the news today that some of the counties across the mountains from me in West Virginia have up to 30". That's a good 25" to 28" more than I want to see...great pics or not :).
